What’s in a door installation price, and what isn’t

The door itself

Hollow-core doors are light and cost least; solid timber doors are heavier and cost more, as the table shows. Ask whether a price includes the door or only fitting one you’ve bought.

The frame

A new door can be hung in a sound existing frame: it’s trimmed to fit, and the hinges and latch are cut in. A pre-hung door comes already hung in its own jamb, so the old frame comes out.

Hinges, handles and locks

Bunnings’ internal door service includes standard barrel and cylinder door furniture. Other prices may treat handles, locks and stops as extras, so ask.

Architraves

If the frame comes out, the architraves around it come off too, and they’re refitted or replaced. See skirting and architraves.

Painting and the old doors

Ask whether painting the new doors and taking the old ones away are in the price or left to you.

Period doors in Adelaide villas and bungalows

Stone villas and 1920s bungalows often have four-panel timber doors, and swapping them for flush doors changes the look of the house. A damaged period door can be matched in the same panel style, or repaired and rehung. For front doors, heritage replica entry doors are the dearest line in the table above.

In a house built before the mid-1980s, asbestos.sa.gov.au says to check for asbestos before repairs or renovation, which matters when old frames, wall linings or architraves are disturbed.

Widening a doorway is structural work

Door installation means fitting doors into existing openings. Consumer and Business Services’ window and door installation licence category covers exactly that, and doesn’t allow making an opening higher or wider. Cutting a new opening, or widening one, is structural work, and in an external wall it isn’t covered by Schedule 4’s exemption for repairs and internal alterations, so it can need approval. It’s outside the door installation quoted here.

Ask about cavity sliding doors before planning one: fitting a cavity unit means opening up the wall, and a load-bearing wall makes that structural work.

Door repairs and rehanging

A door that sticks, drags or won’t latch often needs its hinges tightened or reset, the edge planed, or the latch or strike plate moved, rather than a new door. The national guide’s figure for a door repair or rehang is in the table above.

If doors all through the house start sticking, or cracks open above door frames, mention it: movement in the floor or walls can be a structural problem rather than a door fault.

Questions about door installation cost

What size is a standard internal door?

Bunnings’ installation service treats doors up to 2040 mm × 820 mm as standard, and fits non-standard doors up to 2340 mm × 920 mm. Measure your existing door’s height and width before buying.

Does Bunnings’ door installation service cover Adelaide?

Its page doesn’t say which areas it covers, and it only fits new doors bought from Bunnings, not Marketplace items. Check with your local store.

Do I need approval to replace a front door?

Replacing a door like for like in its existing opening is repair or maintenance, which Schedule 4 clause 4(4) exempts as long as it doesn’t affect the building’s structural soundness. That exemption doesn’t apply at a local or State heritage place, so check with PlanSA first if your home is one.

Do door installation prices include GST?

The Quote Yard’s SA guide and Bunnings’ service page don’t say. What’s The Damage’s national repair figure includes GST (checked 28 October 2026). Ask for GST to be shown on any quote.

Should the door frames be replaced too?

Only if they’re damaged or rotten, badly out of square, or the door size is changing. A sound frame can take a new door, which saves replacing the jamb and architraves.

Can a door be cut down to fit?

Within limits. A door is trimmed to suit its frame and the floor, but a door far too big or small for the opening is better replaced with one of the right size. Send the opening’s measurements.
