How much does a carpenter charge in Adelaide?

What carpenters charge per hour, per day and per job in Adelaide: a published hourly rate card, national call-out and minimum charges, and prices for decks, pergolas, door installation and trims.

  • First hour: $150 + GST (The Complete Handyman)
  • Carpenters: $85 – $155 an hour (metro, national)
  • Decks, pergolas, doors and trims priced per job

The short answer

The one Adelaide rate card we found is a handyman business that lists carpentry first: The Complete Handyman charges $150 + GST for the first hour, $75 + GST for each half hour after and $1,000 + GST for a 7-hour day, with materials at cost. A national quotes marketplace, The Quote Yard, lists $85 – $155 an hour for carpenters and joiners in metro areas, and a call-out or minimum charge of $70 – $120 (checked 28 October 2026). Most carpentry is priced per job once the work has been seen.

Why most carpentry is priced per job

An hourly rate says little about the final bill: the time a job takes depends on the house, the access, and what turns up once old timber comes off. For a defined job, a written price for the whole job lets you compare quotes on what you’ll actually pay. Hourly charging suits work whose extent isn’t known until it’s opened up. A carpentry quote should spell out:

  • the scope: exactly what’s built, replaced or repaired
  • the materials, and who supplies them
  • whether old timber and offcuts are taken away
  • whether the job needs PlanSA approval
  • whether GST is included
  • the contractor’s name and BLD licence number

What changes a carpenter’s price

Materials

Hourly rates usually leave materials out: The Quote Yard’s rates exclude them, and The Complete Handyman charges them at cost. Doors, boards, robe systems and trims are priced on top.

The age of the house

Older homes have frames that have moved and walls that aren’t square, which adds fitting time. In a house built before the mid-1980s, asbestos.sa.gov.au says to check for asbestos before repairs or renovation: see asbestos before renovating in SA.

Access and waste

Carrying materials through a side gate or up stairs takes time, and old timber and offcuts have to go somewhere. Check that removal is in the price.

Written quotes and contracts from $20,000

Many carpentry jobs cost less than $20,000, the line for “minor domestic building work” in SA. That figure only decides the paperwork. From $20,000, the contract must be in writing with the contractor’s licence number and the prescribed notice, the deposit can be no more than 5%, and there’s a cooling-off period of five clear business days. Below it, put the price and scope in writing anyway. See how to check a builder’s licence in SA.

Questions about carpenter rates

Does a handyman need a licence to do carpentry in SA?

Yes, if they carry on a business doing building work for others. Under the Building Work Contractors Act 1995, hanging doors, fitting skirting and repairing decks or fences are building work, and there’s no dollar amount below which the licence isn’t needed.

Do carpenters’ rates include GST?

It depends on the publisher. The Complete Handyman’s Adelaide rates are plus GST, What’s The Damage’s national figures include it, and The Quote Yard doesn’t say. Ask for GST to be shown on any quote.

Is it cheaper to book several small jobs at once?

Usually. Where there’s a first-hour or minimum charge, it applies to each visit, so one visit for several jobs spreads it. Tell us every job when you ask for a quote.

Can I supply my own materials?

Often, yes. Say what you’ve bought before the job is quoted, so the carpenter can check it suits the work.

What if the job grows once old timber comes off?

Agree in writing how extra work will be priced before it starts. For contracts of $20,000 or more, the Act requires the words “This Price May Change” or “Estimate Only” where the price isn’t fixed (s 29).

What happens to old timber and offcuts?

Ask whether removal is in the quote. EPA SA says CCA-treated posts must go to an EPA-authorised landfill and can’t be burnt or buried on site, and burning treated timber is banned.
